• Smtp / Email server

From 10mm@1:103/705 to All on Thu Aug 7 19:09:18 2025
I have a FIOS business line with 5 statics and my bbs is on one. Since it is business I get all the ports opened. I need email for my domain, and I am wondering if it is going to be a pain in the butt to manage or if I should just stick to a google workspace or another off site place to host my email.

    Thanks
    Chris

The Synchronet mail server easier to setup/manage if you have all ports open and can just run all inbound and outbound mail services for your (BBS) domain yourself.

It's not a pain, but does require some setup. You want to make sure you
don't allow SMTP relay from outside of your network. If you do, you need
some kind of SMTP auth so people can't route email through your server.

There's email security now that if not set up, will result in many mail
hosts routing your mail to SPAM. you'll want to read up on SPF, DKIM and
    DMARC.

I use a tool called mxtoolbox.com to help set up the DNS records you'll
    need for the security settings.

You may want to set up secondary MX somewhere, so if your system is
down, another system will accept mail for you and pass it on when you
    come back up.

So, maybe Google Workspace is the easier choice. :)

I find SPF alone to be "enough" (e.g. to send mail to gmail.com).
