• Posting ANSIs

From phigan@1:103/705 to All on Sun Sep 1 09:49:55 2024
Anyone know why when I try to post some ANSIs in the BBS advertisements base I get blocked and told I can't make that post? I forget the exact message at this moment, but I can probably get it again if necessary.

However many you have configured for that sub-board's "Duplicate Checking" option in SCFG.

When I get all the way into the Ads sub-board in SCFG, the option for Duplicate Checking says Enabled, 10000 message CRCs.. I tried checking the wiki for some info on what that means, but didn't find anything. If the maximum messages is set to 1000 and duplicate checking is enabled, I'm guessing that means there would need to be 1000 messages rolled through before it can be posted again.

What is the "10000 message CRCs" setting?

I'm guessing that means there would need to be 1000 messages rolled through before it can be posted again.

The fix(es) for this "problem" are:

    1. Disable dupe checking in BBS Ads sub-boards.
    2. Alter your Ad post slightly each time. I use a script to insert the current date at the bottom of my Ad before it's posted. That way it's
seen as a different (non-dupe) message.

What is the "10000 message CRCs" setting?

It means it will search 10000 messages to see if the current one matches
any of them and is therefore a dupe. Doesn't make any sense to have
that set like that if you only keep 1000 messages. Make them match. I suggest 5000 for both.

Documentation for this option can be found in the sysop manual (https://synchro.net/docs/message_section.html#SettingUpMessageBase) and built-into SCFG (hit the F1 key to display help).

    If the
maximum messages is set to 1000 and duplicate checking is enabled, I'm guessing that means there would need to be 1000 messages rolled through before it can be posted again.

    Correct.

Like you described, but you can also read the manual or the online help in SCFG.

The message text CRC history (a sub-boards ".sch" file) can be larger (even much larger) than the number of messages that a sysop chooses to store in a base. And it makes sense if one wants to prevent old dupes from being imported into their (networked) message bases.
