I think it is a good rule, Fidonet traditionally is real names only, so the sysop field should contain the real name of the sysop. First name and last name. But where did you find that rule?

    except the keyword 'UUCP'.

I wonder if that has still any use...

Yes, I think it should. Fortunately a useless modem flag is just useless, it does no harm except take a few bytes extra which in this day and age is not really an issue. Same goes for MO, CM and file req flags for a Pvt node.

I read this in the z2pnt title when I wrote https://brorabbit.g0x.ru/files/perl/npk.zip (pnt list maker). Then I just copied all the checks to https://brorabbit.g0x.ru/files/perl/nlerr.pl, which checks the nodelist.
I suppose this is Ward's decision made on 06/02/2009.

I wrote to him in another echo (I am not sure he reads netmails).

    Any respons?

Yes, the reality is that we don't have a pool of people standing by to
take over responsibilities. Succession planning was inconsistent before,
    almost non-existent now.

If I decided to retire as RC, I don't know if any of my downlinks would
be able to take over responsibilities. ZC1 would probably have to merge
two regions - probably a better choice given Fidonet's reduced size.

From a technical point of view, it's a very bad idea - the Russian internet is heavily filtered, with new restrictions being added almost daily. So IP connectivity between Russia and Moldova will just keep getting worse and worse.

So the idea of having a network in a Region that won't even be able to connect to nodes in that same region sounds completely crazy to me.

The same as to any other region. In either case, these will still be international phone calls.

MvdV> Moldova doen not even border Russia.

However, the native language of the 469 network sysops is Russian and it will be easier for them to communicate with other sysops and coordinators.

MvdV> So that is not a technical decision, it is a political decision.

This isn't a solution at all. These are the wishes of the 469 network sysops. Of course, they can be moved to any region other than the one they want without asking, but that would be a political decision, since technically they don't need to leave R46, and any region would be no better.

    sysops of
network 469 do not want to be in R56 and, in case of need, to leave R46,
would prefer R50, which is connected, among other things, with the fact
that Russian is their native language.

There is only 1 sysop left in net 469. If he wants to be in R50, he can
just apply for a node number there. Nobody is stopping him. There is no
need to move a net with 1 sysop anywhere. It needs to be abolished if
    anything.

I know two sysops who write in echo, but it doesn't change the essence.

I think Michiel tested the POTS only node (192), and there was no modem on the other end. So there is only 1 node.

We tried this three years ago. It didn't work. Pavel (R46C)

    wanted to migrate to R50.

MvdV>> There is no technical reason to move Net 469 to R50.

The same as to any other region.

R56 is not he same as any other region. R56 is the "catch all" for those who are unable to maintain a region of their own and who do not fit - technically or otherwise - in any other region.

In either case, these will still be international phone calls.

What phone calls? There is no functioning POTS node left in net469.

MvdV>> Moldova doen not even border Russia.

However, the native language of the 469 network sysops is Russian and
it will be easier for them to communicate with other sysops and coordinators.

The official language of Moldova is Romenian. Moldova is a candidate member of the EU and last year the majority of the people of Moldova voted pro EU. So this Russian speaking sysop of yours is not a typical Moldovan citizen. If he is not happy with the democratic choices of the Moldovan people he has the choice to pack his bags and nove to Russia.

These are the wishes of the 469 network sysops.

One get not always get what one wants. Especially not if one is a minority.

It became clear that the 460 and 4600 networks were also
supposed to be migrated to R50 in accordance with the FPD.
    That's how it all ended.

    MvdV>> FPD??

FidoNet Policy Document (Version 4.07, June 9, 1989). 1.3.2 Geography

The Crimean and Sevastopol networks have a telephone code of +7-...

    1) On the order of the occupation force.

    2) Telephone calls are largely irrelevant in the age of Fido over IP.

Crimea may be occupied territory, according to international law it is part of Ukraine. That is not negotaible.

Sure, I know it's a hobby and a volunteered position... But if somebody volunteers to "do a job" and then... doesn't do the job, well.... they should get fired. One of the key points here is how one defines "a
longer period of time". Perhaps two weeks absent isn't quite long
enough, but maybe a MONTH is, IMHO. If I'm gonna be away from home for more than a week, I let my RC know.

A month might not be realistic in the current state of Fidonet. But half year or eaven a year is. The problem might be who is going to keep track of that, and enforce things to happen.

    It benefits no
one if a majority of nodes in a net or region are only there on paper.

100% agree. Remove the segment in those cases.

Just removing is not enough, if there are a few remaining nodes, they need to be coached to another net. Someone needs to be found who can do that.

It's al ready special you agree with anyone... so... ;-)

Agreed again! It's difficult to find others that think as correctly as
    I do. ;-)

Well, sometimes live gets in the way, but within a couple of weeks
    should be the norm.

I personally (as an NC) think that's excessively long to notice that a node is down, but that may be just me. I dislike "autopilot sysops" anyway, and if an NC is on autopilot, he should be fired, IMHO.

It's not a job, it's a hobby and they are volunteers. But if they show
no interest at all at participating in a meaning full way in this hobby for a longer period of time, something should be done.

Sure, I know it's a hobby and a volunteered position... But if somebody volunteers to "do a job" and then... doesn't do the job, well.... they
should get fired. One of the key points here is how one defines "a
longer period of time". Perhaps two weeks absent isn't quite long
enough, but maybe a MONTH is, IMHO. If I'm gonna be away from home for
more than a week, I let my RC know.

    It benefits no
one if a majority of nodes in a net or region are only there on paper.

100% agree. Remove the segment in those cases.

Nick removed a few RC's in the past that were not functioning. So it
    can be done...

Yes, I'm aware of that, and it was the right thing to do. Could have
been MUCH sooner even, I'd say.

A month might not be realistic in the current state of Fidonet. But
half year or eaven a year is. The problem might be who is going to keep track of that, and enforce things to happen.

Well there are certainly different opinions on how long is too long. I
think that an NC who doesn't notice a non-connectable node in a month is
not doing the job properly, beyond any doubt.

    It benefits no
one if a majority of nodes in a net or region are only there on paper.

100% agree. Remove the segment in those cases.

Just removing is not enough, if there are a few remaining nodes, they need to be coached to another net. Someone needs to be found who can do that.

Yes, OK. I originally read that as *all* the nodes were only there on
paper. Sure, any remaining nodes would need to be migrated. Agreed
that sometimes that can be tricky, but it's not impossible.

My whole point in all of this is that MONTHS or even YEARS of this
dragging on is way too long, and people should be held more accountable
when they don't do their jobs.

    Hello All,

    From FTS-5000.005 5.3 field 7:

Systems without a listed PSTN line must use 300, including ISDN

So... Anything other than "300" following "-Unpublished-" is wrong.
