I think it is a good rule, Fidonet traditionally is real names only, so the sysop field should contain the real name of the sysop. First name and last name. But where did you find that rule?

Yes, I think it should. Fortunately a useless modem flag is just useless, it does no harm except take a few bytes extra which in this day and age is not really an issue. Same goes for MO, CM and file req flags for a Pvt node.

I read this in the z2pnt title when I wrote https://brorabbit.g0x.ru/files/perl/npk.zip (pnt list maker). Then I just copied all the checks to https://brorabbit.g0x.ru/files/perl/nlerr.pl, which checks the nodelist.
I suppose this is Ward's decision made on 06/02/2009.

There is no technical reason to move Net 469 to R50. Moldova doen not even border Russia. So that is not a technical decision, it is a political decision. And a wrong one. Moldova is an EU canditate. It it can not be a region of its own it should move to the Z2 "catch all" region: R56.

It became clear that the 460 and 4600 networks were also supposed to
be migrated to R50 in accordance with the FPD. That's how it all
ended.

From a technical point of view, it's a very bad idea - the Russian internet is heavily filtered, with new restrictions being added almost daily. So IP connectivity between Russia and Moldova will just keep getting worse and worse.

So the idea of having a network in a Region that won't even be able to connect to nodes in that same region sounds completely crazy to me.

Yes, the reality is that we don't have a pool of people standing by to take over responsibilities. Succession planning was inconsistent before, almost non-existent now.

Unfortunately, there is no rush for such positions at the moment.

If I decided to retire as RC, I don't know if any of my downlinks
would be able to take over responsibilities. ZC1 would probably have
to merge two regions - probably a better choice given Fidonet's
reduced size.

I vividly imagined the screaming asses of politically concerned sysops if Ward did something similar with the R46 and R50. ;)

PS: I don't yet see a technical need for radical action.

R56 is not he same as any other region. R56 is the "catch all" for those who are unable to maintain a region of their own and who do not fit - technically or otherwise - in any other region.

What phone calls? There is no functioning POTS node left in net469.

These are the wishes of the 469 network sysops.

One get not always get what one wants. Especially not if one is a minority.

Presently there are just two ranks: Comissioner and Deputy Comissioner. But anyone can participate and submit input as a sysop of good standing. No test or any other formal requireemts.

I personally (as an NC) think that's excessively long to notice that a node is down, but that may be just me. I dislike "autopilot sysops" anyway, and if an NC is on autopilot, he should be fired, IMHO.

to use a 6-to-4 tunnel for this? If v4 goes under, doesn't the tunnel
also no longer work? What's the point of that? When v4 dies, my ISP
would (hopefully!) offer v6 and I'd be in the club. My thoughts are
that if it isn't available to me natively, what *actual* use would a
tunnel kludge provide to me?

It's not a job, it's a hobby and they are volunteers. But if they show
no interest at all at participating in a meaning full way in this hobby for a longer period of time, something should be done.

should get fired. One of the key points here is how one defines "a
longer period of time". Perhaps two weeks absent isn't quite long
enough, but maybe a MONTH is, IMHO. If I'm gonna be away from home for
more than a week, I let my RC know.

Nick removed a few RC's in the past that were not functioning. So it
can be done...

A month might not be realistic in the current state of Fidonet. But
half year or eaven a year is. The problem might be who is going to keep track of that, and enforce things to happen.

think that an NC who doesn't notice a non-connectable node in a month is
not doing the job properly, beyond any doubt.

Just removing is not enough, if there are a few remaining nodes, they need to be coached to another net. Someone needs to be found who can do that.

Yes, OK. I originally read that as *all* the nodes were only there on
paper. Sure, any remaining nodes would need to be migrated. Agreed
that sometimes that can be tricky, but it's not impossible.

My whole point in all of this is that MONTHS or even YEARS of this
dragging on is way too long, and people should be held more accountable
when they don't do their jobs.
