• Pact of Blood and Ice in Baen's Bar

From Richard Falken@1:123/115 to All on Wed Nov 23 13:08:57 2022
    Hello!

I finally posted Pact of Blood and Ice to the Baen's Unniverse Annex subforum at Baen's Bar.

For those who don't know, it is a workshop for writers to post stories. The staff and other writers work with authors to improve the pieces. In theory, they would pick the best ones and publish them in a section of The Grantville Gazettes, which was a fan magazine based on Eric Flint's 1632. They went as far as to declare that the workshop was the Official submission system for the magazine, but as far as I have seen, that was pretty much a farce - I have rarely seen anything posted there used as magazine material. Now, after Flint's death, the magazine is no more, but the workshop remains.

Long story short: if you have an account at baensbarn.net you can show up there and make some noise, so it looks like I have actual fans :-)

BTW I am kind of pissed of because Flint died and took the Gazette with him. I didn't ever read it, but as an origin of the Baen's Unniverse Annex slush subforum, its disappearance feels like a loss.

I'm an inveterate fan of the Ring of Fire and have tons of the Gazette issues. You're wrong. There was plenty of work from the Bar which ended up not only in the Gazette but expanded and became part of the Canon and into individual books.

    Flint's
death, the magazine is no more, but the workshop remains.

I'm not sure that's true. David Weber just spoke about that so I'll wait a bit to see what happens.

I was active in the Bar for over a year and the number of pieces I saw that were included in the Unniverse Annex could be counted with the fingers in the hand of a horse. Horses have four fingers. Total.

If you are talking about the rest of the magazine, then sure. The workshop was very active and I am sure a couple of them were regularly picked up.

Regarding the fate of the magazine, I just read a post from Walter Boyes that read "if there was still an Unniverse Annex I would buy this story" so my expectations are not optimistic. Optimism only serves the purpose of getting disappointed. Boyes was also instructing other authors to become creditors in order to get their bankrupcy money from Flint s so optimism is something I am only going to feel with an unhealthy ammount of drugs.

It turns out you need to have an account with their store too in order to get in. It seems they enforced that rule during the cancel crisis but I had the idea they had removed it last year. Seems I was mistaken.

I support that requirement 100% which started during the "Sad Puppies Saga" as far as I remember.

Noted. If it requires two accounts then it will be low priority
