    Better Late Than Never

I apologize for the long delay between issues of the Fidogazette. I
am busy these days with health issues but I am doing much better than
I have been in quite some time. I've let the BBS run on auto for the
most part these past few months but I am working on things again!

I moved my main BBS back to Maximus/2 v3.01 running under ArcaOS PE
5.0.3 in a Virtualbox virtual machine on my personal computer running
Devuan Linux. So far, so good!

Thank you for your patience with me and I hope to be able to keep
    publishing the 'Gazette.

As always, I would love more of your content for the 'Gazette.

Running DOS on 64-bit Windows and Linux: Just because you can

DOS isn't dead. You can still run it and its apps, even now

Liam Proven in Prague Tue 28 Jun 2022 // 08:52 UTC

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

FOSS Fest There are still ways to run DOS apps under 64-bit Windows
and Linux, and a lot of free apps to choose from.

One of the differences between the Microsoft and Apple approaches
to maintaining widely used OSes is that Apple is quite aggressive
about removing backwards compatibility, while Microsoft tries hard to
    keep it.

One of the few times Microsoft removed a whole compatibility layer
from Windows was with the launch of 64-bit Windows, which went
mainstream with Vista in 2007. 64-bit editions of Windows can't run
16-bit apps, whether yhey're for DOS or Windows.

Enterprising developers, of course, take this kind of thing as a
    challenge.

There are obvious ways round this, of course. You can run DOS in a
virtual machine. It works fine - the problem is that it's very
difficult to get anything in or out of it. Modern PCs are also so
vastly more powerful than they were in DOS' heyday of the 1980s that
you just run a PC emulator, such as DOSBox or the enhanced DOSBox-X.

These programs emulate an entire PC, so you can run games that
require long-obsolete hardware such as SoundBlaster cards. DOSBox-X
even supports Windows 3.x and Win9x.

But a whole-system emulator is overkill if you just want to run
some DOS productivity apps. A long-standing way to just open a simple
DOS prompt on a Windows 64 machine is Jos Schaars's vDos, and it too
    has an enhanced cousin, vDosPlus.

A popular use for vDosPlus is to run the original DOS WordPerfect,
as documented on Edward Mendelson's very helpful WordPerfect for
    DOS page.

Most Linux distros used to include DOSEMU, which is one of the
oldest Linux apps around, dating back to 1992.

Despite its name, it's not an emulator: it's a sort of dedicated VM
    FGAZ 18-12 Page 3 4 Jul 2022

for running actual DOS under Linux. This has two benefits: one is
that DOS apps can access real hardware, such as devices attached to a
physical parallel port. The other is that whatever you run executes
at full native speed, which on any 21st century PC is blazingly fast
    by DOS standards.

Conveniently, DOSemu can map DOS drive letters to Linux
directories, including on the fly with the LDREDIR command, so it's
much easier to get things in and out of the DOS app than it is a full
    virtual machine.

You can even run WordPerfect's WYSIWYG graphics mode, which was
almost unusably slow when the app was new Unfortunately, the V86
mode of the x86-3 architecture has been removed from x86-64, so now
it must be emulated, and possibly as a result, many distros have now
dropped the trusty DOSemu along with x86-32 support. But don't panic,
because a new team has taken over maintenance of the venerable
program, and although unfinished, DOSemu2 is getting very usable, and
the project offers ready-made packages for Ubuntu, Fedora, and
    openSUSE.

Multiple sets of instructions are available for dosemu2, including
a set from the industrious Professor Mendelson and another from
    uberhacker Tavis Ormandy.

An excellent source of DOS freeware is the FreeDOS Repo. For
instance, it has MS Word 5.5, WordPerfect Editor (the freeware
plain-text editor version of the famous app), Protext, and more.

    Getting Forgetful

I forgot to publish the FG last week. I was so busy that it
completely slipped my mind! I will try to avoid that next time.

An interesting article from the Register about using the x86 Raspberry
Pi Desktop Linux distro to resurrect older computers is something I
    hope you find interesting.

As always, I'm always looking for content!

x86 Raspberry Pi Desktop is a great way to revive an old PC

The OS Formerly Known As Raspbian isn't just for the diminutive
    computer

Liam Proven in Prague Mon 11 Jul 2022 // 10:45 UTC

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has updated its lightweight Linux for
    32-bit PCs.

When the first Raspberry Pi launched just over a decade ago, the
Raspberry Pi Foundation offered an ARMv6 version of Debian 7. It
worked, but it had a problem: while the Pi 1 had a hardware
floating-point unit, the ARMv6 version of Debian couldn't use it. FPU
    support needed the ARMv7 edition.

Fortunately, Mike Thompson and Peter Green rose to the challenge and
created Raspbian - later officially adopted by the manufacturer and
renamed the Raspberry Pi OS. It started out as a seriously cut-down
edition of Debian, recompiled for ARMv6 plus hardfp support - because
the fairly feeble SoC in the early Pi needed all the help it could
    get.

Both the Raspberry Pi and its OS have been huge successes, and both
the hardware and software are regularly upgraded. What gets less
attention is that for five years, there's also been a PC OS version.
It's called the Raspberry Pi Desktop. Barring a couple of Pi-native
components, such as Mathematica, it's the same set of customizations
applied to the x86-32 edition of Debian.

Now the PC edition has received an update to the same Debian 11 basis
as the Pi edition. However, unlike the Pi edition, it hasn't gone
64-bit: this is still a 32-bit OS for 32-bit PCs (and elderly Intel
Macs), and it doesn't use the fancy 3D Mutter window manager.

Most mainstream distros are now 64-bit only. Ubuntu, for example,
dropped 32-bit support in 2019. The ones that still support the
architecture are often more technical distros for more skilled users,
such as Debian and the minimal Alpine Linux.

The Raspberry Pi Desktop is a welcome exception. It asks almost no
questions during installation and has very few options to tweak.
There's no choice of desktop or components, the only thing you can
adjust is the disk partitioning. You get the PIXEL desktop
environment, which is a lightly customized version of LXDE and some
basic tools: the Chromium browser, Claws email, LibreOffice, and some
    educational and programming-related tools.

Although the installation program hasn't been branded - it still says
Debian everywhere - the resulting OS has. It's rather simpler than
    FGAZ 18-13 Page 3 18 Jul 2022

the default Debian installation process. It configures a Raspberry
Pi-themed graphical startup screen and so on, and once installed, a
first-run wizard automatically starts which installs updates, creates
a user account and finalizes the config.

We found installation very slow, but to be fair, we were trying it on
two very old PCs: a Thinkpad X61 convertible and a Sony Vaio P, a
sub-netbook powered by an elderly Atom. With only 2GB of RAM each,
both worked perfectly. The OS automatically used Wi-Fi adapters,
Bluetooth and so on. On the Vaio, the installer didn't pick up the
installation of Windows Thin PC with which it shared a hard disk, but
the command sudo update-grub fixed that automatically and it
    dual-booted fine.

For a low-end PC for a not-very-technical user, Raspberry Pi Desktop
is a great little OS. It won't magically make an old PC quick again,
but it works pretty well. Programs launch slowly from old rotating
hard disks, but once they stagger into memory, they run quite usably.
It can handle light web browsing, for instance, but for bashing out
emails or basic productivity duties, it should cope fine.

There are other 32-bit distros still out there. Debian itself, and
Linux Mint Debian Edition 5, both support x86-32 - but you'll need a
fairly quick machine, with 3-4GB of RAM and hardware 3D, for Cinnamon
to be responsive. Although ZorinOS 16 is 64-bit only, ZorinOS Lite
15.3 is still available in a 32-bit edition, with Xfce.

The Pi OS, with its customized LXDE desktop, uses around 200MB of RAM
at idle, and it will run in just 1GB. Slightly more than antiX Linux,
for example, but it's much more complete and well integrated. Even
Alpine uses more than that, and it definitely requires some tech
chops to install and configure, whereas the Pi OS needs next to none.
We tried adding Xfce to our install of the Pi OS, only to find that
    its RAM usage nearly doubled.

Since ChromeOS Flex now needs a 64-bit machine and 4GB of RAM, we'd
say the Pi OS is the best way to revive an old PC for a non-technical
    user. (R)

Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love, and got married. The
ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.

Why did the programmer use the entire bottle of shampoo during one
shower? Because the bottle said: "lather, rinse, repeat."

I have a new theory on inertia but it doesn't seem to be going
    anywhere.

Good News To Brighten Your Day

    From: https://tinyurl.com/38wrx9rv (goodnewsnetwork.org)

A 90-year-old owner of multiple McDonald's franchises has done an
extraordinary good deed for his employees, who were at risk of losing
    their livelihoods.

When news broke that Tony Philiou was set to close, remodel, and
rebuild a brand-new restaurant in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, there was
    obvious concern among workers.

But, the staff had nothing to worry about.

Philiou flipped his first burger as an employee at this exact location
60 years ago; now he's the boss who chose to continue paying all 90
employees, even though they would not be able to work for him during
    renovations.

"I have people here that make a living here and go from week-to-week
pay," he told WKYC News. "How can I tolerate for them to not have a
    paycheck?"

"You're going to sit home. You're going to get paid," said Philiou,
recalling his words in the speech he delivered to workers.

Last week, the brand new Cleveland-area Golden Arches reopened with a
    ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 6.

I'm trying. Though I do still get irritated easily. I'm dealing with Bjorn going off the rails in COOKING for no reason. I am trying hard not to get irritated because I really do not want another heart attack.

But I'm glad someone is reading the FG. For a while there, I though I screwed up something in the BBS change. (GoldEd picked the tagline; I didn't.)

    Sean,

I'm trying. Though I do still get irritated easily. I'm dealing with Bjorn going off the rails in COOKING for no reason.

My theory is that in order to become annoyed or irritated, you must want to become annoyed/irritated. If you fear it might cause you another heart attack then there are other priorities, for example dropping all those moderator statuses...

Bjorn is OK, just give him some time ...

But I'm glad someone is reading the FG.

It cuts-off here somewhere in the middle...

Being moderator doesn't bother me. Dealing with people who are old enough to be my father or possibly grandfather yet act like fools is what gets me. But I have realized a wonderful solution: I just fired up my twit filter yet again.
    It works -great-.

I need to figure out an solution to post per page like I did under Linux. I'll have to add that to my "to do" list. I have doctor appointments at least three days a week for the next eight weeks plus I am porting my BBS doors to a new doorkit and that takes a good while.

Some good news though: I have been working hard to get my diabetes under control to some rather great success.

Good news: the same utility I used under Linux is availabler under ArcaOS so I should be able to port that script over very quickly.

    Sean,

Being moderator doesn't bother me. Dealing with people who are old
enough to be my father or possibly grandfather yet act like fools is what gets me. But I have realized a wonderful solution: I just fired up my
    twit filter yet again.

I've got a couple of things to say. First of all, there's Dossche's law #9:

"Never think you know a person from conducting on-line discussions. You
need to break bread with that person first, have a coffee, get drunk
together and keep eachother from crashing to the floor in eachother's
vomit. Having sex may be a bonus."

Do you know Bjorn? How he ticks? How he talks? No you don't, you know as good as nothing about him. Probably he's a softspoken Swede, maybe a tad drunk, speaking in the melodic-rithmic way that Scandinavians do. He's got a lot to offer and we have sort of plans to meet someday before we kick the bucket.

True, he can be an arse, so can I, but try to consider him as a resource. You are a resource to me too and that makes it a lot easier.

By twtting someone you may miss good stuff. A twit filter may have been a tool 25 years ago, these days with the numbers we are, it is a loss.

Some good news though: I have been working hard to get my diabetes under control to some rather great success.

Diabetes is a still misunderstood killer.

Enough with the Bjorn nonsense please. I lose respect for you every time you stick up for that Swedish meatball thats well past his expiry-date and needs to join his expired partner in the afterlife. As soon as possible.

What he "offers" is nonstop blah blah blah about a country many Sysops live in that cannot do anything to change the political affairs of. The way he blah blah blah's about it, you'd think he wants to be president of said country.

I gave him a fair chance a long time ago even when warned not to... I know enough about him now to form an opinion. And that is one where he can F right off and die and I won't be the least bit sad about it. On the contrary it
would be seen as a nice breath of fresh air. For MANY people.
