• Echo BACKBONE lists

From elistmaint@2:250/1 to All on Sun May 17 18:28:16 2026

    Hello everybody!

I have done a wee bit of spring cleaning on the backbone areas including my system removing all dead echo areas (that are not in the ELIST moderator list).

This involves some 90 - 100 ish areas.

How do I know - my msg base is JAM so any echo with a header file (.jhr) of 1k is empty of messages and I have the full backbone held (including the dead one's).

I also noticed that there are a lot of moderated areas that are also dormant i.e, zero traffic so can all mods please check your own system for these and delete any that you also have zero traffic having confirmed with your uplink that you are connected to them (with your uplinks).

If you need to, you can also confirm with me to verify that the areas are dead here and yes I do retain posts for 2 years or more other than for time limited areas such as adverts other than for echos which are only held here for 90
days (well I will change my system to that as currently the default is 2 years or more. I am not doing this because of shortage of disc space - I have plenty - just a tidy up of the system as messages are consuming 507 MB.

    Hi Vince,

Will this file be named BACKBONE.NO and distributed in the monthly Elist?

Thanks, it will be a big help to a lot of Sysops.

    Terry

No, I dropped the .NO file as no one was using it having posted that was my intention with no replies regarding.

The only files issued are :
    ELIST.NA
    ELIST.RPT
    BACKBONE.NA
    BACKBONE.RPT

The .RPT files are a full listing for each echo including where available descriptions etc although many on Backbone only do not have any.
The others are originally from ELIST where moderators have not renewed expired echo's so the descriptions etc., are transferred over as well.

IF there is a strong interest in a BACKBONE.NO file, I can manually create it with just the echo tag name for all such areas removed.
Note I do mean manually - yes I will have to type them all up using a text editor. At the moment I still have the list of removed echo's.
