Ditto for BACKBONE.RPT so it should be 38, I will take a look at the code Thanks for the bug report.

I will have to make a decision on the way it is computed any way as it looks like counting for all reports but the count then should be 38.

I think it should only mention the number in ELIST.RPT. The ones in ELIST.RPT and BACKBONE.RPT are probably the same areas with warnings anyway...

    Bye, Wilfred.

The problem is it produces these reports without resetting the count - I think - I have to check it and fix it.

Are you hatching a new echo list every day?

You not reading the posts here ?

Any updates to the elist system are noted and at 23:30 each evening that such updates occur that change description or title as well as new entries generate a new On-Demand archive.

This ensures that for those Sysop's that wish to keep up to date for the file BACKBONE.NA can do so as this file is useful to auto update their Echo areas when any downlinks request any and this allows their system to automatically deal with the request without any Sysop intervention.
This method allows their system to auto create new echos into the system and
at the same time helps to request any not currently supported to their designated Echo uplink.

Of course this does depend on Sysops having a procedure / script / batch command file in place to extract the files they need and place then in the correct folder / directory for this all to happen :)

Personally I like auto with me doing as little as possibly when ever available.
Keeps my time on maintenance down.

You know there is (or used to be) a file area just for this purpose: BACKBONE (However the last BACKBONE.NA I received in there was in 2019)

If you used that one for the daily updates, you can keep the ECHOLIST area "clean" with just monthly updates.
And people have a choice what they want to receive and use.

The created archive contains amonst other files up to date copies of : BACKBONE.NA - Full list of ALL echo's available via the Fidonet network BACKBONE.RPT - Full lists of the same with all details as a report
ELIST.NA - Ditto but only for moderated echo's.
    ELIST.RPT - Ditto

plus any other network files of similar types.

The previously last BACKBONE.NA was used as a reference to help build the system in 2019.

All this is reported within the help files supplied.

Are you hatching a new echo list every day?

You not reading the posts here ?

Yes, I do but that does not answer the question.

Are you hatching a new echo list every day?

Any updates to the elist system are noted and at 23:30 each evening that such updates occur that change description or title as well as new entries generate a new On-Demand archive.

It is great that you are maintaing the echo list, and I appreciate that.

There are likely changes to the echo list all the time but I think it is enough to publish a new echo list once a month, as it has always been.

This ensures that for those Sysop's that wish to keep up to date
for the file BACKBONE.NA can do so as this file is useful to auto
update their Echo areas when any downlinks request any and this
allows their system to automatically deal with the request
    without any Sysop intervention.

You know there is (or used to be) a file area just for this purpose:
BACKBONE (However the last BACKBONE.NA I received in there was in
    2019)

If you used that one for the daily updates, you can keep the ECHOLIST
area "clean" with just monthly updates. And people have a choice what
they want to receive and use.

The created archive contains amonst other files up to date copies of : BACKBONE.NA - Full list of ALL echo's available via the Fidonet network
BACKBONE.RPT - Full lists of the same with all details as a report ELIST.NA - Ditto but only for moderated echo's.
    ELIST.RPT - Ditto

plus any other network files of similar types.

The previously last BACKBONE.NA was used as a reference to help build the system in 2019.

All this is reported within the help files supplied.

I know. But your argument was they were usefull for automatic processing. Only the *.NA files are. So you don't have to hatch the complete archive every time a minuscule change takes place. A monthly frequency is fine for the .RPT files...

Or if you don't agree, perhaps create separate file areas for the monthly and daily files, so people can choose.

    Bye, Wilfred.

Come on all the archive is very small any way.

Must admit there has been a few more changes for ihis month so far i.e., 3,4,5,6,7 and 8.

    This is rare though.

Think my system can handle the bandwidth though even at a 20 Mb upload speed.

The are very small files compared to some of the stuff I shift.

I concur with Wilfred's idea here. The BACKBONE.NA hasn't been updated in years, not in the BACKBONE file area. I believe I am connected to that area at your node.

If you wanted to you could update that file and/or BACKBONE.RPT as you please in the BACKBONE area.

I don't know if it needs updating daily but if we could keep that file fresh it would be a good thing.

What happens if a change occurs between 23:30 and 00:30 ?

It will go into the next days no-demand archive.

I will be looking at the code to see why there is so many updates going out in the on-demand archives.

It should not be so frequent, it is possibly there is a coding error for what is changed.

It was for the following changes :

    1. A new echo created.
    2. A echo for which a change to the Title has been made.
    3. A echo for which a change to the description has been made.

The third one I think can be killed off as I have never found a BBS package that make use if it, say by displaying it to a user only by user option of the rules and includes mbse as used here.

The second (rules), I would suggest is also not really that important and can wait for the next months archive.

So only new echos added should be in the On-Demand facility.

I will look at the code today, change and do initial testing and pass it to the
elist system for a compile and update the current version.

This will reduce the number of updates.

It is possible there is a bug that is causing this issue on any new code added over the last month or so, in which case I will fix it.

I will also look at adding code to generate a BACKBONE.NA file for the file area BACKBONE to go out monthly and may be, on demand.

The elist system does NOT get new echo's added that often so on both the above cases should not produce a high incidence of new BACKBONE.NA files during a month.

However, the test will be to see exactly what happens when in production.

I am guessing that the high run of these on-demand archives over the last week or so is because of echo;s changing the moderator / co-moderator but this should NOT be a reason for these archives to be created - again could be a bug in the code. I will be taking a look at it all.

The code for descriptions was a wee bit OTT as no BBS uses it yet as far as I know. There again I suspect not many make use of the rules or at least load then in from the monthly archives although I do for mbse but I have very few bbs users.

Most if not all, use the web to grab files via web browser or ftp as it is quicker.
