• Looking for a specific door game

From Edward Dillinger@1:229/426 to All on Mon Feb 5 23:23:52 2024
Hello all, this is the first time I've posted on fidonet. Haven't really been involved with bbses since 99 but recently started working on getting my old renegade board up with the collection of doors that I grew up with and enjoyed greatly. However, one of them I've never been able to find in all these years. One of the first bbses I dialed into had this game that reminded me of Star Trek, but it didn't have that name to my knowledge. I remember there was a space grid that you would move your space ship on with similar mechanics as LORD II, but you could attack other player ships and then take them over and I remember you would issue like commands as captain and stuff. I realize that's not a whole lot to go off of, but anyone by chance remember what one it was? I only saw it on the one bulletin board, so I assume it was a more obscure door. Thanks in advance!

The only door that comes to (my) mind that is sci-fi themed and plays like LORD II would be Defenders of Zentax. I highly doubt this is what you're looking for though, since DOZ never made it out of beta. It was released in '98 though, so maybe? There's still an old active Tripod website for it, just in case it's indeed what you're hunting for:

    https://zeltar.tripod.com/doz-door.html

I only saw it on the one bulletin board, so I assume it was a more obscure door.

Do you happen to remember which BBS software that board ran? Asking because if it was something like WWIV, Wildcat, or MajorBBS, that might help narrow the search.

Wow, this game looks amazing! I will have to play this a bit. Unfortunately this is not the game. I don't remember exactly what BBS I played it on, but I primarily dialed into three different boards. One was called The Haven and ran a really old BBS software, one was The Board Not Taken (TBNT) but almost positive it wasn't that one. The last one was called The Wormhole and it ran Pegasys BBS software. TBNT was Renegade, but don't remember what Haven was.

The game only had a small port window in the top left corner of the screen and had information on the entire bottom half of the screen and the right top half dedicated to other stuff. The coolest mechanic I remember was everyone's ships were visible in space on the grid even if they were logged off, sort of like LORD II is with the player showing as a grey face.

Maybe Space Quest 2112? There is a DOS Door and a Win32 server. telnet to shsbbs.net:2112 to check it out! It's pretty fun and more arcade than turn based. I don't know if you can take over other ships though, so this might
not be what you're refering to.

Your description of a small window and the rest being info sounds like Arrowbridge... except of course it had nothing to do with space, and the
window was in the top middle. ;)

IIRC, Tradewars 2 has a small port window in the top left corner, but I
don't remember being able to see the ships of others that were not logged
    on.

I was more of a TW 2002 player, and it didn't have a port window.

Holy crap this is it! However this seems like a much bigger upgraded version of the game. It says that the game is copyrighted 2002, but I do see a version of it posted on archives.thebbs.org dated 1994 which would perfectly match around the time I played it. Thank you so much! I need to figure out if I can get the latest version and pay to register it.

The key is free with the download. I'm not sure how easy the door is to
find, but the server should be easy enough to track down.
