I've written to John Dailey without answer, but I've got the latest version
of global wars and want to run it as an ibbs game. Unfortunately, I can't
even start the executable, it complains about an error in line 60 of the config. The war.cfg file only shows 59 lines of info, and line 60 is all hypens. The executable says it needs to be A, N or P but not what for. Any ideas anyone?

everyone that says they wrote to john dailey with no answer ended up finding out that he DID answer them, they just didn't look in their spam folder or
    they overlooked it somehow.

here is my working war.cfg from datastream with
    redacted info
    https://pastebin.com/raw/cgCdX4xa

Also, you ran into problems and didn't bother to read the documentation.
in 1 minute i pulled it up and did a search and found this

"LINE 59: Allow Direct Fortifications? (A/N/P) (P recommended)
Enabling Direct Fortifications allows a player to fortify armies from
one country directly to any other country, provided he occupies both
countries and all countries in between so as to form a continuous
chain of connected countries. The move is counted as 1 fortification
move regardless of the distance between the countries. With Direct
Fortifications disabled, fortifications can only occur between the
player's adjacent countries, with each fortification counting as one
move. A : All games will use Direct Fortifications N : No games will
use Direct Fortifications. Disables Direct Fortifications in all
games. P : Allows a player to choose if he wants Direct Fortifications
enabled or disabled (for that game only) when he begins a new game.
    "

this paragraph explains what a/n/p stands for

so i think you're trying too hard. just relax and check for your mistakes.

The war.cfg file only shows 59 lines of info, and line 60
    is all hypens.

Version 3.x (inter-BBS version) has a few additional configuration items compared to v2.7. It sounds like you have copied over an existing configuration file from a 2.7 installation. The additional lines are:

LINE 60: Allow Fixed Turn Order games? A/N/P
LINE 61: Pass turn to next player in Fixed Turn Order games if player AWOL. LINE 62: BBS identifier (only the first 17 characters are used)
LINE 63: Enable InterBBS games (Y/N)

Have a look at the comments in the example configuration file that came with 3.0. It will explain these settings in detail.

    I'm
not sure where you guys found yours...

so what the shit is your problem?
this back and forth stuff is exhausting
did you get it working or not?

i have v 2.7 which says maint release.

what your problem probably is, is a bad line in your config.
if there's any problems with the official release email the owner.

i downloadd the version from his website. i then used my datstream war.cfg

it has more lines than yours. it works

Your configuration works in version 3.0 because it **IS** a version 3.0 configuration file.

The same configuration file will also work in a 2.7 installation. 3.0 did not change the existing 59 configuration lines, it merely added to them. The first 59 lines are the same between the two versions. So 2.7 will read a 3.0 configuration file and just ignore the additional lines.

sometimes you need to rip it all out and redo it.
especially when it's operator error. everyone makes mistakes, and when you try too hard you can lose focus.

Or start over in a new directory. I have a couple of directories with some LORD false-starts or failed upgrades. I need to weed those out. :)

3.06 is meant to be unpacked over a 3.05 installation, not a 2.7. There
are files other than WAR.EXE that are updated after 2.7 that you likely
    now do not have installed.

Yes, that was not clear to me, but I did resolve that issue after realizing how many files were in the 3.05 install. I'm now ibbs capable with
    league618.
