  • Ethiopean 737 MAX8 crash settlement

    American aircraft manufacturer Boeing must pay $28.45 million (24.56 million Euro) in damages to the widower of a victim of the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash. A Chicago jury made the ruling in the first civil lawsuit against Boeing over the two fatal crashes of 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which claimed a total of 346 lives in 2018 and 2019.

    In March 2019, the Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi crashed six minutes after takeoff, killing 157 people from 35 countries. Families of 155 victims sued Boeing between April 2019 and March 2021. At the start of the trial, there were eleven other charges. Three other charges have since been settled out of court.

    In the end, the jury only considered the case of the relatives of Shikha Garg, a woman from the Indian city of Delhi who was on the Ethiopian Airlines flight.

    Boeing must, indeed, have deep pockets ...

    1/ There's this MAX8-thing which has far from ended
    2/ Most likely there will now be an MD11-thing after the Louisville crash
    3/ There are several historic liability issues re: 787-construction problems
    4/ Issues with Spirit Aerosystems
    5/ Delays with 787-deliveries
    6/ Ridiculous delays with the 777X which should have been delivered starting
    2020 and now is delayed "at least" until 2027
    7/ There's the Air Force One delay

    All of these are costing tonnes of money... But the military branch is a cash-cow...

    That remains to be seen. While the DC-10 had the engine/pylon seperation in 79, it was found to be the cause of an airline mx practice that the manufacture refused to sign off on. The MD-11 has a completely different pylon design, as far as we know.... None of the other grounded / inspected aircraft had any issues.. The seperation could very well be a red herring. The engine attachment pins after all are designed to shear and seperate the engine to prevent catastrophic dammage to the wing, could an uncontained engine failure have put such stress on the engine mount? Then you just have to determine why number 3 had a compressor stall, which put the final nail in the coffin, in a quad or 3 holer, you are not climbing on a single engine.

    3/ There are several historic liability issues re: 787-construction problems

    All new airframes have teething problems.. DC-10, MD-11, 747.. ETC..
    4/ Issues with Spirit Aerosystems. Well, since Boeing BOUGHT Spirit, hopefull they will get those issues sorted. Never should have farmed out manufacturing. They were needlessly trying to duplicate the Airbus consortium's manufacturing processes. Optics alone was a bad idea,,

    5/ Delays with 787-deliveries.
    6/ Ridiculous delays with the 777X which should have been delivered starting
    2020 and now is delayed "at least" until 2027
    7/ There's the Air Force One delay.. That was mostly Trump induced..

    All of these are costing tonnes of money... But the military branch is a cash-cow...

    Military / government contracts will always fare better than Civilian.. Just ask LM.
