My Thursday Nets
From

Note: This info was updated on Aug. 28, 2025.
You can find yours truly, Daryl Stout, N5VLZ, on this net today. A
list of all the nets that I can be found on during the week is at the
hyperlink on my QRZ bio -- look for the link that notes "Nets Where
N5VLZ is Net Control".
Nets on The QuadNet Array utilize the modes of D-Star, DMR+, WIRES-X,
and Fusion, together on one site. Go to openquad.net for more details,
and connection options. Note that the QuadNet Array no longer offers connections via Echolink, or Brandmeister via DMR.
Nets on The Sunflower Network utilize the modes of AllStar, D-Star, DMR, Echolink, Fusion, M17, P25, and TGIF. For more details and connection
options, go to www.sunflowernet.us
With multiple modes on each of these, it's best to have several ways
to connect, in case one or more of these modes is down at net time.
Times are noted in local US time, and in UTC (when the US is on Standard Time). Take note of the following caveats in regards to net times:
1) In the US, Standard Time is from the first Sunday in November, to the
2nd Sunday in March...with Daylight Savings Time the rest of the year.
2) UTC Time (noted when the US is on Standard Time) is ONE HOUR EARLIER
when the US is on Daylight Savings Time, as noted above.
3) Arizona, Hawaii, and the US territories are on Standard Time year
round. In this case, during Daylight Savings Time, their net times are
ONE HOUR EARLIER.
4) Confirm the net times with Net Control if you have questions.
5) Last minute changes and cancellations can occur at any time.

imagine you lived in alaska (or wherever might be fairly remote), and at a set schedule everyone got on their radio to say hi and prove they're alive.. or perhaps to pass along information, etc
then imagine it got somewhat cumbersome with the number of people involved, so you had a "net control operator" that sort of guided the people checking in along so they didn't just transmit on top of each other
i'd say that's sufficient to understand the concept. only mostly they just throw out their callsign ("check in"), say hi, perhaps answer some sort of question. (think: "what's your favorite dinner to make on a cold night?") and then go about their lives.
i don't check in to those very often because it's BO-RING. much better talking to the people who get on every day or so and actually chat

As a lurker, I actually prefer nets to most one-on-one QSOs. They tend to spend a lot of time on the frequency, but really don't say that much; One person will say something, then there's this long pause before the otheer replies because they're also doing something else, so the attention isn't always there. And if both are doing this, it makes for a raher tedious listening experience.
My favorite nets are the themed variety, a specific purpose or topic for getting together. I also like listening to contests; I like the rapid-fire exchanges.

Wilfred,
Or at least not every day, the information in those messages
hasn't changed in months...
There were some recent changes, due to checkin modes, net days and
times, etc.
BTW: What are "nets" anyway? ;-)
In amateur radio parlance, nets is short for "networks"...but it's
usually where a bunch of amateur radio operators gather on a repeater,
an Echolink node, or via things such as AllStar, D-Star, DMR, Fusion,
M17, P25, TGIF, etc. -- and have a "Traffic Net".
The nets are usually sponsored by a particular ham radio club, or
they can be related to a certain region, or to another hobby. There
can also be weather nets related to Skywarn, Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT)...or on non-ham radio topics such as Trains/Railroading,
Food, RVing/Camping, Astronomy, Youth, and more.
There are nets on all bands and all modes practically around the clock, around the world...and they can be on traditional RF, or with implementing internet for communications. As long as one can get the traffic out (an
FCC official notes that "We are communicators FIRST, and hams SECOND"),
no matter what the means is...especially if it's a situation involving
the safety of life or protection of property...it works.
Also, if one doesn't put much into a hobby (I don't care what it is),
they better not be expecting to get much out of it. There's something
in ham radio for everybody...just as there is with BBSing. It'd be an
awfully boring world if everyone was the same.
But, if you don't like what's in a message area/network, or on a ham
radio traffic net, there are plenty more out there that may be more to
your liking.

Those are what I call "Hi, Bye, And QSY" (hello, goodbye, I'm going
to another net to checkin that's meeting at the same time as this one").
The main reason I like to hear folks checkin, is that it lets us know
that they're still "on this side of the grass", and not "A Silent Key".
i don't check in to those very often because it's BO-RING. much

It depends on what net you're talking about it. I do a weekly net on
Trains And Railroading...and there are other nets on cooking, computers, RV's/Camping, Astronomy, and more.
